Sizing & Fit

Our 40mm oak boards are cut to size to your exact dimensions, making them suitable for a wide range of applications including shelves, window boards, desktops and statement joinery.

Due to the natural characteristics of solid oak and the machining process, a small tolerance of ±1–2mm may occur on length. Thickness is typically consistent, but a slight variation upto ±5mm can occur.

If installing between walls or into a recess, we recommend allowing a small fitting gap of 2–3mm to ensure an easy installation.

For larger or heavier pieces, particularly at 40mm thickness, ensure adequate support is used depending on the span and intended use.

Choosing the Right Thickness

40mm oak boards are a substantial option, ideal where a thicker, heavier appearance is desired or where additional strength is required.

This thickness is commonly chosen for:

  • Chunky floating shelves
  • Desk tops and worktops
  • Window boards with a deeper projection
  • Statement pieces where a more solid, premium look is preferred

Compared to thinner options, 40mm provides a more pronounced edge profile and a stronger visual presence.

If you’re looking for a slimmer or more lightweight option, you may prefer our 25mm oak boards. For a balanced middle ground, our 30mm oak boards offer a combination of strength and a slightly lighter appearance.

For the most heavy-duty or premium applications, our 50mm oak boards provide the thickest and most substantial option, suited to large spans, feature pieces and high-impact designs.

Timber & Construction

Our oak boards are made from kiln-dried European oak, selected for its strength, stability and natural character.

Each board is constructed using full-length staves, carefully edge-glued to create a solid and durable panel. This method ensures excellent structural integrity while maintaining a clean and consistent appearance across the surface.

All boards are machined flat, cut square and sanded smooth in our workshop before being hand-finished to highlight the natural grain of the timber.

As a natural material, every board will display its own unique grain pattern, colour variation and character features such as knots and small splits.

Finish Options

Boards are available either unfinished or with a protective hardwax oil finish.

Unfinished boards are sanded smooth and ready for your own treatment.

Finished boards are treated with a high-quality hardwax oil, enhancing the natural colour and grain of the oak while providing protection against everyday use.

Please note that finishes will slightly deepen the tone of the timber, and variation will occur between boards due to the natural characteristics of oak.

Edges Profiles

Boards are available with either a square edge or a natural waney edge.

Square edge boards are cleanly machined on all sides, creating a straight, uniform profile suited to modern interiors and precise installations.

Waney edge boards retain the natural outer edge of the tree, following the organic shape of the timber. This creates a more rustic, characterful appearance, with each board having a unique edge profile.

Unless otherwise specified, edges will be finished consistently to match your selected style.

Delivery & Lead Time

Each board is made to order in our workshop.

Estimated dispatch time is 7–10 working days.

All items are carefully packaged to protect the timber during transit. Tracking details will be provided once your order has been dispatched.

What to Expect

Oak is a natural material, and no two boards are identical.

You can expect variation in grain pattern, colour tone and natural features such as knots and small splits.

These characteristics are part of the natural appearance of solid oak and are not considered defects.

FAQs

What does “live edge” or “waney edge” mean?

A live (waney) edge retains the natural contours of the oak tree, including gentle curves and character. Each board is unique. A square edge option is also available if you prefer a cleaner, straight finish.

Are the boards made from one piece of oak?

The boards are crafted from full-length solid oak staves, carefully joined for strength and stability. We do not use short offcuts or finger-jointed pieces.

Will the boards contain knots or natural markings?

Yes — and that’s part of the appeal of real oak. Natural features such as knots, grain variation, and colour differences are expected and make each board unique.

Are the boards made from solid oak or veneer?

All of our boards are made from 100% solid oak. There are no veneers, laminates or engineered cores just real solid timber throughout.

Do you offer custom sizes?

Yes, most of our products have either a built in calculator so you can purchase the exact size you need or have menu sizing to choose from.

What are your dispatch times?

We aim to dispatch our boards and shelving within 7 - 10 days but in busy periods this can be up to 2 weeks, if you have any questions please contact us.

Where do you source your timber?

We source our timber from responsibly managed forests in France and across Europe, prioritising sustainability, quality, and long-term forest management.
